Originally released in 1940, Pinocchio is Disney’s best-animated film from its first decade of releasing full-lengths. The Blu-ray release lets the classic shine like it never has before.

Pinocchio gets everything right, from the meticulous animation and the memorable songs to the story that functions effectively as both a tale of a father’s love and a morality lesson. It is at turns humorous, dark, and heartwarming, all thanks to the rich atmosphere in which every scene is enveloped, whether it’s Geppetto’s cottage, Pleasure Island, or Monstro’s belly.

Watching the film again after who knows how many years reminded me of how well the best Disney films can transport you simply on the merit of carefully crafted animation. The look of Pinocchio is timeless, and because its settings exist in a world that doesn’t quite look like anything in this one, it is the only way to travel there.

As for the characters, each one is striking, whether endearingly or terrifyingly so. We connect immediately with the bumbling, selfless Geppetto and the good-natured Jiminy Cricket. We’re terrified by the suddenly abusive Stromboli and the purely evil Coachman.

No less engaging are the non-speaking characters - the irrepressibly cute kitten, Figaro, the idiot henchman cat, Gideon, and the massively frightening whale, Monstro.

Pinocchio feels like a puzzle that has every piece in the right place. It’s a joy to experience.

The Blu-ray Disc

Pinocchio is presented in 1080p high definition with a full frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. This is an absolutely gorgeous visual presentation; the film has never looked so vibrant. Clearly, a lot of work has been done to present a clean image, even more so than for the past DVD release.

Picture sharpness and clarity are excellent throughout the entire film, and the colors are as bold as you could ever want them to be. Pinocchio’s bright pastel wardrobe of yellow, red, and blue pops off the screen. The intricately detailed backgrounds, especially for scenes taking place at Pleasure Island, can be seen in all of their glory.

Animated films tend to look good on Blu-ray, and Pinocchio is no exception. Its near-70-year age doesn’t matter at all.

The audio is presented in Dolby DTS-HD with up to 7.1 surround sound capability. Even on a system with lesser capability than that, the sound is flawless from start to finish. Dialogue, songs, and plenty of ambient background noise are all perfectly clear and distinct throughout.
